The Center’s Community Membership Council focuses on the active recruitment and involvement of people through community participation in activities to improve the quality of life for Cleveland area residents. Clevelanders are encouraged to assume leadership within the agency’s Membership Council and in their community/neighborhood. Community and neighborhood meetings are held to provide information exchange, issue identification and develop action strategies.
Specifically, the Community Membership Council provides:
- Community and neighborhood-based leadership
- Direct participation in political and programmatic decision-making processes of the Empowerment Center
- Organized community action to effect social change
- Voter registration and census support
In addition, The Empowerment Center focuses on increasing awareness of issues that impact the day-to- day lives of low-income people through information and open-communication. Through workshops, community forums, and the distribution of brochures, pamphlets and a newsletter, citizens are educated on a wide range of issues and available resources impacting families in this community.
Specific education efforts include:
- Issue-oriented workshops and forums
- Leadership development training programs
- Family leisure time/recreational and educational outings
- Periodic newsletters
